Vernon Neppe's One Page Introduction

Professor Vernon Neppe, MD, PhD, FRSSAf, DFAPA, MMed, DABPN, DPsM, FFPsych(SA), DSPE, DCPP (ECAO), FRCPC-10, MMed (Psych), DABFM, DABFE, DABPS (Psychopharmacology) FACFE, LMACFE, MB, BCh was trained at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and did a Fellowship at Cornell University, New York. He was recruited to the USA to establish the first Division of Neuropsychiatry in a Psychiatry Dept (U. Washington, Seattle, 1986). Subsequently, he established the Pacific Neuropsychiatric Institute in Seattle in 1992 and became Adj Prof. at St Louis U. (now Dept Neurology and Psychiatry).

Prof. Vernon Neppe has been listed under (the peer chosen) "America's Top Doctors" and is one of the few to be listed in all sixteen issues. These uniquely include 5 fundamental but related medical specialties, namely Neuropsychiatry, Behavioral Neurology, Psychopharmacology, Forensic Psychiatry and Psychiatry. His specialties also include Consciousness Research, Phenomenology, Epileptology, Neuroscience, and recently he has published extensively with new models in mathematics, physics, and philosophy. in which his contributions have been pioneering and prodigious. He pioneered the extended use of anticonvulsants in psychiatry (from 1980) and this has impacted literally millions of patients, his master's (MMed) and doctoral (PhD Medicine in Psychiatry and Neurology) research impacted the temporal lobe of the brain, and the déjà vu phenomenon at www.brainvoyage.com; plus his site www.pni.org) and he pioneered high dose buspirone in tardive dyskinesia.

Dr Neppe is the author of hundreds of peer-reviewed publications in all six continents. His books and EBooks include Reality Begins with Consciousness: A Paradigm Shift that Works (with Dr Ed Close), Cry the Beloved Mind: A Voyage of Hope, Innovative Psychopharmacotherapy and four on Déjà Vu. (see www.brainvoyage.com). He has lectured extensively round the world and in 90% of medical school affiliates in the United States.

He has described new medical conditions, most notably and recently Paroxysmal Neurobehavioral Disorder, and Paroxysmal Photosensitive Disorder, and also Non-responsive psychosis and Temporolimbic instability. He has developed many new medical concepts, including chindling, dysproccia, and possible temporal lobe symptoms. His phenomenological classifications include linking epilepsy and psychiatry in a DSM type fabric. He also developed tens of evaluations, including tests and historical screens in neuropsychiatry and consciousness, such as a series of 10 tests constituting a neuropsychiatric diagnostic screen, the INSET relating to seizures, the BROCAS SCAN to evaluate higher brain functioning, the STRAW to evaluate movement disorders, the SCHIQ to evaluate historical exceptional intelligence, the SOBIN to screen for soft cerebral cortical disturbances and the Neppe Narcolepsy Questionnaire.

Dr Neppe has lectured in twelve countries, chaired international symposia, and worked internationally with the media. He led the first USA and International Delegation in Neuropsychiatry and Psychopharmacology. He is the recipient of numerous awards, recognitions and grants in USA, South Africa, Mexico and internationally in Portugal. This includes being elected as the first USA based MD to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of SA, and as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
